These are historical and current animations of the traffic flow in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and Saint Paul) metro area. The data was collected from the Mn/DOT Traffic Management Center website every 5 minutes all day long and then turned into animated movies that you can view.
Use these animations to plan your travelling! Don't get caught in a traffic jam where your only recourse is to get off at the next exit. Worse yet, don't get caught on a meter ramp where you have no recourse except to wait.

Here is the current status of all meter ramps which are turned on and metering traffic.
Here is a current list of traffic incidents.
Each night at midnight, I compute summary statistics of the average metro area congestion for each time period. I do this using a histogram computed from the pixels in each five minute traffic map stored in the animations. You can use the current statistics to compare the relative traffic congestion on a day to day basis. I also have ramp meter test statistics for the period from October-December 2000 when the meter ramps were turned off. Judge for yourself how well the ramp meters are doing!
I am working on a study of the I-394 Reversible (Express) Lanes here.
I've also got some projections of what will happen if the sane lane restrictions are removed.
I've also got an air pollution calculator that you can use to see what will happen to air pollution if the sane lanes restrictions are removed.
The Twin Cities traffic animation tool was smithed on 10/19/2000.
